The closest RV parking to Grayson Highlands

Most people bringing an RV to this corner of Virginia are here for one of three things: the wild ponies in the Grayson Highlands balds, Mount Rogers, or a stretch of the Appalachian Trail. We sit within a short drive of all three. The park entrance is 2.4 miles away and the Massie Gap lot — the trailhead for the ponies — is 6.4 miles. Elk Garden, Dickey Gap and Bear Tree Gap are all inside ten miles by road, and Damascus is about forty minutes west on Highway 58.

The spot itself is straightforward. It's level, it sits at the edge of the field rather than in a packed row, and it has 50-amp electric alongside gravity-fed spring water piped from the mountain above us. What it does not have is a sewer connection, and we'd rather say that plainly here than have you find out on arrival: there is no waste hookup and no dump station on the property. Come in with empty tanks and plan a stop on your way out.

Getting a rig in here

The turn is off Highway 58 — the Crooked Road — and the last stretch is gravel. We're comfortable with rigs up to around 30 feet. Beyond that the constraint isn't the pad, it's the room to turn around, so call before you book if you're close to that number and we'll talk through your setup honestly. At roughly 2,900 feet we're high enough that the road in is a genuine mountain approach rather than a flatland driveway; it's nothing dramatic, but take it slow.

What the season does

Late September through October is the busiest stretch — leaf season overlapping with southbound thru-hikers coming through. Spring brings the northbound bubble. Summer is steady and green. Winter here is real winter at elevation: we're open, the shower is heated, but you should come prepared for cold nights and the possibility that Highway 58 gets weather before the valleys do. Cell signal in the surrounding mountains is patchy to nonexistent, so download your maps before you leave the property — though we do have Starlink at the hostel, which is genuinely fast.

Why not the state park?

Sometimes you should. Hickory Ridge inside Grayson Highlands has 38 electric and water sites and takes rigs up to 50 feet, and if you want to wake up inside the park it's the better call. The catch is that it books out roughly three months ahead in season and drops to primitive, porta-john-only service from November through March. We're the alternative when it's full, when you want a heated shower in the shoulder months, or when you want a shuttle to a trailhead and gear you didn't have to pack.
