Camping Near Whitetop, Virginia
Five ways to sleep outdoors within about half an hour of Whitetop — and one significant thing to know before you book anything.
First: the Virginia Creeper Trail is closed at this end
Whitetop is where the Virginia Creeper Trail starts, and for a lot of people that has historically been the whole reason to camp here. Hurricane Helene destroyed the upper 17 miles between Whitetop and Damascus in September 2024, along with 30 of the trail's 31 trestles. The Forest Service awarded a rebuild contract to Kiewit, construction began in December 2025, and the full trail is scheduled to reopen on 31 March 2027.
The Damascus to Abingdon half is open and rideable. If the Creeper is your trip, base yourself around Damascus. If you're coming for the ponies, Mount Rogers or the Appalachian Trail — all of which are completely unaffected — read on.

Where you can actually camp
Grayson Highlands State Park — Hickory Ridge
The best-known option, and rightly so. 38 water and electric sites taking rigs up to about 50 feet, 28 primitive tent sites, plus yurts, a bunkhouse and an equestrian campground next door at Chestnut Hollow. $15–$40. Reopened in May 2026 after renovation. The catches: it books out roughly three months ahead in season, and it runs primitive with porta-johns only from November through March. Creeper Trail Campground
In Whitetop proper, right at the trailhead, with RV hookups, primitive and group tent camping, renovated bathrooms and a café. Rigs up to 28 feet, some sites only 18. It's a good campground — its problem right now is simply that it's built around a trail that won't reopen until 2027.
Mount Rogers National Recreation Area
Forest Service campgrounds including Grindstone, within about half an hour, offering well-spaced sites with water and electric on a seasonal calendar — typically late April through November. Quieter than the state park, less service than a private campground.
Dispersed camping in the Jefferson National Forest
Free, primitive, and legal in much of the national forest subject to Forest Service rules on siting, fires and stay limits. No water, no toilets, no shower, no backup. Check current alerts before relying on any particular area — conditions and closures in this region have shifted a lot since Helene.

We're on Highway 58 near Whitetop, 2.4 miles from the state park entrance and on the Appalachian Trail at mile 496.5. Four tent pads at $15, one RV spot with 50-amp electric at $35 (no waste hookup), a glamping tent at $60, a yurt at $100 and a heated bunkhouse at $40. All of them include an indoor heated shower, rec room, party deck, Starlink WiFi and spring water. What we have that the others don't: trailhead shuttles, gear rental, food on request, hiker mail drops, and a trout stream at the bottom of the field. We're open year-round.
What people actually come for
The free-roaming wild ponies in the Grayson Highlands balds. Mount Rogers, the highest point in Virginia. The Appalachian Trail and its shelters — Thomas Knob, Wise, Old Orchard, Trimpi, Lost Mountain. Bouldering in the boulder fields. Trout fishing. Whitetop Mountain at 5,518 feet, which you can drive most of the way up. A fuller list is on our things near us page.
None of it depends on the Creeper Trail. That's worth saying clearly, because the closure has made some people write off this whole corner of Virginia for a couple of years, and it really shouldn't.

Is the Virginia Creeper Trail open near Whitetop?
Not the Whitetop end. The upper 17 miles between Whitetop and Damascus are closed for reconstruction until 31 March 2027 after Hurricane Helene destroyed the trail bed and 30 of its 31 trestles. The Damascus to Abingdon half is open and rideable. If riding the Creeper is the reason for your trip, plan around Damascus rather than Whitetop for now.
What is there to do near Whitetop if the Creeper Trail is closed?
Most of what draws people here is unaffected. Grayson Highlands State Park and its free-roaming wild ponies, Mount Rogers — the highest point in Virginia — Whitetop Mountain itself, the Appalachian Trail, the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, bouldering in the Grayson Highlands boulder fields, and trout fishing are all open and running normally.
Can you camp for free near Whitetop?
Dispersed camping is permitted in parts of the Jefferson National Forest and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, subject to Forest Service rules on where you can pitch, fire restrictions and stay limits. It is free and it is genuinely primitive — no water, no toilets, no shower. Check current Forest Service alerts before you count on a particular spot.
Which campgrounds near Whitetop take RVs?
Creeper Trail Campground in Whitetop takes rigs up to 28 feet, with some sites limited to 18. Hickory Ridge inside Grayson Highlands State Park takes up to about 50 feet on its 38 electric and water sites. We have one spot with 50-amp electric and spring water, comfortable up to around 30 feet, with no waste hookup. There are also RV parks on the Damascus side, roughly 40 minutes west.
How cold does it get at Whitetop?
Colder than the valley forecast suggests, and earlier in the year. Whitetop Mountain tops out at 5,518 feet and the whole area sits high — we are at roughly 2,900 feet and Grayson Highlands is above 4,300. Shoulder-season nights catch people out constantly. Cell signal across the area ranges from patchy to nonexistent, so download maps before you set off.
