Hiking Mount Rogers: Virginia's Highest Peak

| Jeff Davises Hostel
Rocky outcrop and open ridge on the approach to Mount Rogers, Virginia

Mount Rogers is the highest point in Virginia at 5,729 feet. It is also, and there’s no gentle way to put this, a summit with no view. The top is a dense stand of Fraser fir and red spruce, and you walk into it, touch the marker, and walk back out.

This sounds like a complaint. It isn’t. The walk to Mount Rogers is one of the finest days out in the southern Appalachians — it’s just that the good part happens on the way, not at the end.

The standard approach: Elk Garden

Most people start at Elk Garden, the gap on VA-600 between Whitetop Mountain and Mount Rogers. It’s the highest road access, which means you begin with elevation already in the bank.

From there you follow the Appalachian Trail north. The route climbs through pasture and open highland before reaching the ridge, passes Thomas Knob Shelter near the top, and meets a short spur trail that leaves the AT and runs to the actual summit through the spruce-fir forest.

That last stretch is the strange and wonderful part. You step out of open, windy grassland into a dark, damp, moss-hung boreal forest that feels like it belongs a thousand miles further north — because ecologically it does. It’s a relic, left behind when the glaciers retreated, surviving only because it’s high and cold enough.

Then you touch the rock at the top, and you turn around.

The part that’s actually worth it

The balds. The open, grassy, wind-scoured high country between Elk Garden and Rhododendron Gap has no equivalent anywhere else in Virginia. On a clear day you can see for a very long way in every direction, and you’ll likely be sharing the grass with the Grayson Highlands ponies.

If you only have time for part of the day, spend it up on the open ground rather than pushing for the summit marker. The summit is a box to tick. The balds are the reason to come.

Planning the day

Start early. Afternoon thunderstorms build fast in summer, and there is nowhere to hide on exposed balds. Being off the high ground by early afternoon is a good habit.

Take more water than the distance suggests. Sources exist but aren’t evenly spread, and open sun plus wind dehydrates you faster than you’ll notice. Treat what you collect.

Layer for a different mountain than the one you parked on. The summit area runs meaningfully colder than the trailhead, and the wind on the balds is constant. A wind shell earns its weight here nearly every day of the year.

Watch the rock. The scrambly sections through Rhododendron Gap are uneven and get slick when wet. Poles help. So does not wearing road shoes.

Download your map first. Signal is unreliable to absent across the whole area.

Making it one-way

The out-and-back from Elk Garden is the simple version. The better version is walking through — starting at Elk Garden and finishing at Massey Gap in Grayson Highlands State Park, which gives you the entire run of balds without repeating any of it.

That needs a car at each end, or a shuttle. We run shuttles to both trailheads, along with Dickey Gap, Bear Tree Gap, and Damascus. It turns a there-and-back into a proper linear day.

Combining it with other things

Mount Rogers sits inside a cluster of good ground. Whitetop Mountain, second-highest in the state at 5,520 feet, has open balds and a road nearly to the top — the easiest big view in the region. The Virginia Creeper Trail runs down from Whitetop Station toward Damascus and is a gentle, mostly downhill day on a bike. More options on our things near us page.

Where to stay

We’re on Highway 58 at Mouth of Wilson, close to Elk Garden and Grayson Highlands. There’s a bunkhouse, a yurt, a glamping tent, tent sites, and car camping, plus an indoor heated shower, a rec room, and a grill deck down on Cabin Creek — which holds rainbow, brown, and native trout if you bring a rod.

If you’re short a piece of kit, we rent gear — full pack setups or individual items. Otherwise, have a look at the rooms or book a night.
