People book here for the Appalachian Trail, the ponies, or Mount Rogers. Then they wander down the field in the evening, find a hundred yards of clear mountain creek with trout holding in it, and spend the rest of the trip down there.
Cabin Creek runs through the bottom of the property. It’s the amenity nobody comes for and everybody remembers.
What’s in it
Three species, which is more variety than a creek this size usually offers:
- Rainbow trout — the ones you’ll see most readily, and the most willing.
- Brown trout — fewer, larger on average, and considerably more suspicious of you.
- Brook trout — the native fish, and the reason to be careful. Brookies are Virginia’s only native trout, they don’t grow large, and they belong here in a way the other two don’t.
The creek runs clear and cold. It came through Helene and settled back down, and the fish came back with it.
When it fishes
Early morning and the last hour of light, as everywhere. The middle of a bright day on a small clear creek is hard work.
Spring and autumn are best. Summer afternoons get warm and the fish get sluggish and spooky; if you’re here in July, fish early. Autumn is the sweet spot — cool water, and the light down in the creek bottom in October is worth the trip on its own.
After rain, give it a day. It clears fast but it does colour up.
How to fish a creek this size
Small water, short casts, and stealth doing most of the work. The creek is narrow and overhung in places, so long rods are a liability and delicate presentation matters more than distance. Fish upstream, keep low, and assume the fish saw you before you saw them.
A light spinning setup works perfectly well. So does a short fly rod if that’s your preference. You do not need to arrive with a lot of equipment.
The legal bit — read this one
You need a Virginia freshwater fishing licence. Being on private property does not exempt you, and trout water in Virginia has its own rules layered on top of the general licence, which vary by water and by season.
Licences are straightforward to get online from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, and you should check the current regulations for this stretch rather than taking our word for it. Ask us when you book and we’ll tell you what we know — but the responsibility for being licensed and legal is yours, and the game warden is not interested in what the hostel told you.
Handle the brook trout gently and put them back.
