Greetings to all. My name is Jeff Davis. I'm the proud owner, designer, builder, and operator of Jeff Davises Campground & Hostel. I've trekked over 5,000 miles on the AT. When you meet me, if you're interested, I have an Ode to the AT poem I love to tell.
In 2012, after summitting Katahdin, it really hit me. For the entire 2,187.6 miles I was living a dream. Getting to Katahdin was it — it was done, finished, over. As I descended the mountain a new dream was being created: I wanted to own, build, and operate a hostel with what I believe a thru-hiker would enjoy.
In 2016 I was blessed again with the opportunity to hike the trail, this time with a purpose. I was looking for the section of the trail I wanted to make my forever home. As my Tramily and I were descending Whitetop Mountain, I said to them, "Oh wow, down at the bottom of this mountain is the start of the wild ponies." In both 2012 and 2016 I had no luck finding a place for four of us. Nothing around, feral ponies, and nine miles above tree line with epic views — it's like an old wild-west movie looking for the Cowboys and Indians. It was clear to me right then: this is where I want to be. In December of 2023 I did it — I made the move and have been here ever since.
There are three beautiful, amazing, friendly Dwarf Nigerian goats — Penny, Maple, and Pamela — who would adore spending time with you. We also have three kind dogs: Abbie, our 13-year-old chocolate lab and the sweetest thing ever; Tinkerbell, a 4-year-old Rottweiler; and her 1-year-old daughter AT (Althea), a Rottweiler/Blue Heeler mix. And Pretty Little Kitty, our almost-one-year-old cat, who is as friendly as they come. We are extremely pet friendly. You know your dog — if it is not pet friendly, please be a decent soul and don't bring a problem to a peaceful place.
The free-range chickens add a huge part to our goal for us and you to eat the healthiest foods possible. Some examples of the healthy foods made here are kombucha and maple syrup. A bright green thumb and homemade dirt — without a chemical added — really adds to the flavor of our vegetables, fruits, and herb garden. We also serve locally grown meats and cheeses.
Breakfast is available upon request with a donation. Please understand the heart put into each meal — I ask the donation speaks for it. Thank you. Breakfast specialties: eggs of all kinds, pancakes, French toast, omelets (meat or vegetarian), bacon, and sausage. No lunches or dinners as of now.
Nestled on Highway 58 (The Crooked Road) in Whitetop, VA, we're an easy stop for AT thru-hikers, section hikers, and anyone looking to explore the Grayson Highlands, Mt. Rogers, and the surrounding Jefferson National Forest.
Whether you're renting gear for a weekend on the trail, catching a shuttle to Massey Gap, or just need a bunk and a hot cup of coffee — we've got you covered. We're hikers first, and we built the hostel we always wished existed.

Stronger After the Storm
Hurricane Helene hit our corner of Appalachia hard, washing away plans and setting things back. But the trail community doesn't quit — and neither do we.
We're opening early to learn, adapt, and improve before the spring hiking season brings thru-hikers through our door. Some things are still a work in progress (showers are coming!), and we're upfront about that. What we do have is genuine hospitality, local knowledge, and everything you need for a great stay.
Every visit helps us rebuild and grow. We're grateful for every hiker who stops by, shares feedback, and becomes part of our story.
